Hampshire Cricket, based at The Ageas Bowl just outside Southampton, have made a significant change to their Membership Packs for the 2022 season - they are now 100% plastic free and environmentally friendly.
Hampshire Cricket Membership Packs
Hampshire Cricket offer a range of Memberships; from junior membership right through to Life membership. Previously all of the associated Membership cards, amounting to thousands every season, were plastic. Despite their durability, plastic cards of course come with well documented issues when it comes to their end of life. They don’t break down. Given that most consumable plastic cards end up in landfill sites and can’t be recycled, this presents an issue. Hampshire Cricket were keen to explore a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly solution.
Previously, when new Members joined the Club, their cards were printed and personalised on site at The Ageas Bowl before being sent out as part of a bigger Membership pack.
The Green Solution
The main driver for change was reducing the Club’s carbon footprint. However, Hampshire couldn’t afford to compromise their brand or messaging. They were also mindful of ensuring a level of quality and service to Members. Being able to personalise and print Membership cards immediately, and on-site, was a big benefit.
The team at Green Gift Cards recognised this and, since they are owned by digital marketing agency Livewire, knew how important brand consistency is. Hampshire Cricket’s values and messaging needed to be conveyed across the Membership information and customer journey.
Beyond the Membership cards, every new Member also received a Membership wallet containing a fixtures card, guest passes that can be used at matches across the season, and a car park pass.
Working in partnership, Hampshire Cricket and Green Gift Card have transformed the Membership pack to be 100% plastic free and environmentally friendly.
The membership cards are now printed on Invercote paperboard, with base printing and a bio-based coating added in advance by Green Gift Card. The Hampshire Cricket team then personalise each card exactly as they did before, using their existing Evolis Primacy desktop printer.
There is no compromise on quality or cost. The new cards are robust, durable and cost-effective.
No disruption, just reduced waste
The fact that there was no disruption to service and no additional hardware or printers needed shows how easy it is for organisations to make the move away from plastic cards.
Hampshire Cricket opted for 10,000 memberships cards and gift packs. They are using the paperboard cards with immediate effect so their carbon footprint is already reducing.
Graham Lycett of Green Gift Card commented, “Hampshire Cricket are definitely batting above average when it comes to their green credentials. They are the first sports organisation in the UK to move away from plastic cards and embrace a fully recyclable and plastic-free solution for their membership packs. It’s been a pleasure to work with the team who have been so forward thinking in their all-round approach to this project.”
Greig Stewart, Head of Customer Experience “As a Club and venue we’re keen to make sustainable choices and Green Gift Card provided the perfect solution through which to improve the environmental impact of our Membership products. We look forward to rolling out similar, sustainable solutions in the future.
Your Membership Cards
If you are looking for environmentally friendly membership cards, we offer several ways in which your membership cards can be personalised. There are options available such as magnetic stripe encoding, sequential numbering, and the addition of functionality like a barcode or embedded smart chip. The cards are still recyclable, even the chip technology is more environmentally friendly compared to plastic and your coatings can be bio-based.
